Almost 30 is edited by Marielle Marlys.
Hi Krista and Lindsay! Huge fans of yours and of the Almost 30 podcast. First-time commenter (trying to find a place to do this privately but alas, here I am). I really enjoyed the general subject matter of this episode but I think that we get something fundamentally wrong that I think we have to acknowledge in order to move our society forward towards collective healing. The author talked a lot about periods/motherhoods and “initations” that women have that men don’t. But do women actually have these initiations at all? I don’t think we do… When a woman starts menstruating, it’s really more of a biological event, often marked with shame. There *used* to be ceremonies around this, but they have been lost (in fact, there used to also be coming-of-age ceremonies for both young men AND women). There is NO CEREMONY in the West that exists for either gender at present. I think the issue that led me to comment is with the word initiation, which implies ceremony. For SO MANY WOMEN, the “initiation” into a period is a brown spot in your panties and a trip to the nurse or a jean jacket tied around your waist. Ugh, and the “initiation” into motherhood is often a sterile birth location, a 48-hour hospital stay, and no support once you’re home. Again, we’ve lost our ceremonies of connection for both men AND women in moments of significance. To imply that these events are honored in the present day for women is simply not true (and a bit polarizing) and I wanted to share my thoughts with you in hopes that one day we can bring these ceremonies back for EVERYONE. Because they are so important to everyone’s health and well-being. Love you guys!
