How to choose a podcast name that fits YOU!
Your podcast name is probably the first thing your audience will see or hear about your show. You want your name to clearly (and quickly!) communicate who you are and what your listeners can expect.
Your podcast name should be engaging, catchy, and immediately seize someone’s attention.
That may sound like a lot of pressure, but our first piece of advice is to remove any pressure you may be self-inflicting and just permit yourself to be creative.
But first thing’s first…do you know the WHY behind your podcast?
Why do you want to start a podcast? What about podcasting do you enjoy and what is your mission for creating your show?
If you’re clear on your why, you’ll be able to better identify a fitting name for your podcast, along with so much more! Your “why” is your North Star, guiding you in any decision you make related to guests, sponsors, opportunities, etc.— so try to get super clear on your intentions.
Start brainstorming and getting dreamy. See what you come up with and see what feels good to you, in your body and mind.
How to pick a podcast name in 3 steps:
1. Grab a pen and paper
Jot down as many words as you can that are related to your show. Use these words to try different combinations. Say it out loud, write it out, and get comfortable with the name.
2. Describe your show to people you trust
Do any words/potential titles come to mind for them? See what they think of when you tell them the name of your show.
3. Give the name space to breathe
Too much pressure and focus might work against you. Your show name will evolve naturally, so trust the process.
What to do after choosing your podcast name:
You’ve already done your brainstorming and established a few strong, resonant options for your show’s title.
Now it’s time to take the next steps and lock in that name!
Do your research and check that no one else has the same podcast name or something similar.
You’re an original, and your podcast name should be too! Plus, you don’t want to be mixed up with someone else’s podcast.
Make sure your title clearly communicates what your show is about.
Remember: Imagine a listener is scrolling through hundreds of podcast choices. Will they know what yours is with just a quick glance?
No one’s got time to read long descriptions. You only have a few seconds to catch people’s eye, so your title needs to draw them in quickly and tell them what they’re getting.
Check that the domain name is available.
You’ll need it later to launch your website!
Don’t use the word “podcast” in the name.
Your podcast will grow into a larger brand, and you want your title to represent that full brand. Not to mention, you can use that space for something more descriptive. What else can you tell them with your title?
When you land on the right name, it will resonate and feel good to you! But the work doesn’t stop there…
